Kinpachimikan: The Astonishingly Sweet Orange Gift Box

Uniquely Designed by Koichi Sugiyama and Minako Endo

Delighting Givers and Recipients with a Premium and Eye-Catching Layout

In Japan, there is a gift-giving custom at the end of the year, where presents are exchanged as a way of showing gratitude. Oranges, especially, are considered a perfect gift for winter. Recognizing this, designers Koichi Sugiyama and Minako Endo have created the Kinpachimikan orange gift box, a package that pleases both givers and recipients with its premium and eye-catching layout.

The Kinpachimikan oranges are known for their rich taste and delicate nature. These oranges have thin peels that even babies can eat. However, due to their scarcity and the difficulty in growing them, they can only be found in the odds of one out of one hundred oranges. The Kinpachimikan orange gift box can be exclusively obtained from the Kadoya real store.

Addressing the concept of one out of one hundred oranges, the package is designed with a simple orange icon as its main focus. The carton box features a fraction of 1/100, depicting an image of a grove standing on a mountain slope. Inside the box, the one-and-only shiny orange is beautifully presented.

The Kinpachimikan orange gift box is not just a disposable package. It is designed as a drawer-type box that can be used even after the oranges are consumed. The box contains gold foil hot stamped details and features a matte varnish on the surface, enhancing the freshness and premium feel of the mandarins.

The project to create the Kinpachimikan orange gift box started in 2009 in the city of Arida, in the Wakayama prefecture of Japan. The design team, led by art director Koichi Sugiyama and designer Minako Endo, worked tirelessly to overcome creative, technical, and research challenges. Through repeated prototyping, they successfully expressed the freshness of the mandarins using the matte varnish technique.

The exceptional design of the Kinpachimikan orange gift box has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. The Kinpachimikan orange gift box exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
